The Edward Barnsley Workshop has been running since 1923 and has a reputation of being one of the finest furniture making workshops in England.
It is also one of the UK’s premier training facilities for fine furniture makers, with the workshop offering apprenticeships, traineeships and also taking on fee-paying pupils.
The training begins with an emphasis on hand work and getting your hand skills to the level required for more complex pieces. You move through the initial training at your own pace but under close guidance and supervision from the workshops craftsmen. Each piece must meet the Barnsley standards before you progress on to the next.
Over the coarse of my 12 months in the workshop I had the chance to build a number of beautiful pieces of furniture as well as seeing many more being produced by others in the workshop.
It was an exciting year and I have benefited from the experience more than I could have imagined. It opened my eyes to a new level of craftsmanship and quality. The traditional and the cutting edge elements strike a beautiful balance in the workshop and really make it a unique and very special experience.
